Resignation planning

Quitting a job without notice: know what it really costs.

Three tools that turn a vague worry into numbers you can act on: what your notice obligation actually is, when you would really finish, and how long your money lasts once the salary stops.

General information only. Employment rules depend on your contract and location.

What you get

A risk read, not a yes or no.

Nobody can tell you from a web page whether you may legally resign on the spot — that lives in your contract and your jurisdiction. What a tool can do is show you which parts of your situation are solid, which are not, and which you have not checked yet.

  • Low risk

    Proceed

Your contract, timing, and money line up. Confirm the details in writing and go.

  • Moderate risk

    Prepare

Workable, but something specific needs fixing first — usually the timing or the buffer.

  • High risk

    Wait

Several risks land at once. Leaving today means carrying them yourself.

  • Needs review

    Review

Too much is unknown for any rating to mean anything. Fill the gaps first.

The check is willing to tell you to wait. It is also willing to tell you that you are ready — and to say plainly when there is not enough information to judge either way.

Can I quit without notice? is the page that takes the question head-on: six steps through your contract, your timing and your money, ending in a risk level with every factor behind it written out.

Timeline

What happens if I quit today?

The order rarely changes. What changes is how much of it you have decided in advance rather than discovered afterwards.

  1. Today

    You submit your resignation

Written notice starts the clock. Once it is sent, the terms of your agreement become the frame for everything that follows, so how you word it matters more than most people expect.

Open question: does your agreement count notice from the date you send it, or the date it is accepted?

  2. Days 1–3

    Your notice obligation is confirmed

HR checks the notice length that applies to you — the contract term, any probation variation, and any statutory minimum where you work.

Open question: which figure applies to you, and is it written down anywhere you can point to?

  3. First week

Early release or buyout is decided

If you want to leave before the notice ends, this is when it gets negotiated: a waiver, a shortened notice, or a payment in lieu. None of these is automatic — each depends on your agreement and your employer agreeing.

Get whatever is agreed in writing before you rely on it.

  4. Notice period

    Handover, leave, and access

Handover expectations, remaining leave, and system access are usually settled here. Some employers put people on garden leave; others expect a full handover to the last day.

  5. Last working day

    Employment ends

Company assets go back, access is revoked, and the exit paperwork is raised. Ask when your relieving or experience letter will be issued — new employers often ask for it.

  6. After you leave

    Final pay and settlement land

Final salary, unused leave, reimbursements, and any permitted deductions are settled. When it is due depends on the law where you work and on your terms — in some places it is the day you leave — so check the date rather than assume one.

Until you know the date, plan your runway as though it arrives late rather than early.

  7. After

    Income changes

If a new job is lined up, the gap is the distance between your last pay and your first new one — usually longer than the gap between the two jobs. If not, your savings carry the whole search.

Before you resign, check three things.

Your notice. Your timing. Your money.

Notice

What does your agreement require?

Timing

When can you realistically leave?

Money

Can you afford the transition?

The point isn't to convince you to quit. It's to help you understand the situation before you act.

  • How to quit a job without notice — the five steps in the order that costs least, whether it is bad to leave immediately, what it does to your final paycheck, and what to do if you have already walked.
  • Resignation letter and email templates — four templates for four situations: immediate, a request to shorten the notice, a buyout offer, and health reasons. Plus the lines to leave out.
  • How notice periods work — where the obligation comes from, when the clock starts, and the three ways it ends early.
  • Notice periods by country — the rules for the UK, Singapore, Germany and France, each sourced to the government that publishes them, with the date it was last read.

How it works

Five steps, in the order that matters.

01

Question

Six questions — where you work, your employment, why now, what comes next, your money, and your contract.

02

Assessment

Each answer contributes a weighted factor — the notice gap against a new start date, the runway against the monthly burn, the parts you have not checked.

03

Risk

Low, moderate, high, or needs review — with the score built from factors you can see rather than a number you have to trust.

04

Explanation

What is working in your favour, what is working against you, and what is still unknown. Each one written out, not reduced to a colour.

05

Next action

A short ordered list of things to do this week, plus the questions worth putting to HR or an employment adviser in writing.

What this is not

  • Not legal advice, and not a reading of your employment agreement.
  • Not a claim about what you may or may not do where you live.
  • Not a promise about how your employer will react.
  • Not stored anywhere — every figure stays in your browser.

Before you quit your job without notice, know what you are risking.

Six questions. About three minutes. You will end up with a clearer picture than most people have on the day they resign.
